Infection Control in Home Care: Keeping You Safe, Every Day

When we step into someone’s home to provide care, we know we’re being trusted with something incredibly precious, their health, their comfort, and their peace of mind. That’s why infection control isn’t just a box we tick at Everycare Rugby. It’s something we weave into everything we do, every visit, every time.

In your own home, you should feel safe and protected. Our role is to make sure that remains true, especially for those who may be more vulnerable to illness. Whether we’re helping with personal care, preparing a meal, or simply offering companionship, good hygiene is at the heart of it all.

Why It Matters So Much

Many of the wonderful people we support are older, recovering from an illness, or living with long-term health conditions. For them, even a simple infection can cause serious complications. That’s why prevention is so important.

Unlike hospitals or care homes, home care happens in many different households, each with its own routines and setups. While there aren’t large groups of people in one place, germs can still spread easily, especially during close, hands-on care. Our goal is to make sure those risks stay as low as possible so our clients can focus on living life to the fullest.

How We Keep Everyone Safe

Handwashing is our first and most important line of defence. We wash our hands before and after providing care, before preparing food, after removing gloves, and any time we might have touched something that could carry germs. If there’s no sink nearby, we carry hand sanitiser so we’re never caught short.

We also use personal protective equipment. Things like gloves, aprons, and masks when needed, to create a safe barrier between ourselves and anything that might cause infection. It’s a simple step that makes a big difference.

Cleaning is another part of our routine. We pay extra attention to the spots people touch most, like door handles, bathroom fixtures, and mobility aids. Regular cleaning helps stop germs from finding a home of their own.

We’re careful with waste too. Anything that could carry infection, such as used tissues or dressings, is thrown away safely, following local guidelines. And if anyone needs a reminder to cough or sneeze into a tissue and wash their hands straight after, we’re always happy to gently encourage it.

Working Together with Families

Infection control works best when everyone plays a part. We often share little tips with families, like keeping cleaning supplies handy, making sure there are fresh towels for carers, and letting us know straight away if anyone at home feels unwell. These small steps help create a safer, healthier environment for everyone.

Adapting to Every Situation

Every home and every person is different. Our carers are trained to adapt infection control to suit each client’s needs. If someone’s immune system is weaker, such as when they’re going through chemotherapy, we take extra care to protect them. If there’s an infectious illness in the household, we follow strict isolation guidance to make sure it doesn’t spread.

During times when illnesses are more common, like flu season or during a COVID outbreak, we step up our measures even further. That might mean wearing extra PPE, adjusting the way we work, or increasing cleaning routines.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Keeping our clients safe is something we take personally. Every member of our team is trained in infection prevention from the moment they join us, and we refresh that training regularly. We also check in on how we’re doing so that high standards are always maintained.

For us, infection control is about more than preventing illness. It’s about protecting independence, dignity, and peace of mind. It’s about knowing that when we walk through the door, we’re making your home a safe and comfortable place to be.

At Everycare Rugby, our promise is to be there for you, not just as carers, but as partners in keeping you well.
